This was the first trip that I was involved in shopping for the girls. We went to the market (a typical third world sprawling open air jumble of stalls) and bought underwear, socks, blouses, shoes, etc. I felt the sisters were afraid of abusing a stranger's generosity and asked several times what else the girls needed. Finally, after much prompting, they said "some of the girls don't have a towel". That was when it really hit me that their condition was desperate. Imagine not having a towel!
